Folk 'n' Fun weekends started in 1984 when a group of folkies from The Black Bull Folk Club in Blaydon took over an outdoor centre near Keswick for the weekend and had a great time. Since then the weekends have continued twice a year, in March and October. So what is a Folk 'n' Fun weekend? A bunch of likeminded people go away for the weekend - drink, sing, play or listen, but generally enjoy themselves with an ample supply of wet stuff to lubricate the throats and musical appendages. People arrive from Friday afternoon with a singaround from 7:30 pm until we are asked to vacate the premises, which is usually quite late (or early depending on how you look at it). There are more singarounds on Saturday afternoon and evening culminating in a final get together on Sunday afternoon. You don't have to stay all weekend, you
can even just drop in at the sessions whenever you like! |

High House Farm Brewery, Matfen - 17, 18 & 19 October 2008
|
Well, over the years, people have commented that he couldn't even do that. I have proved them wrong because I have organised a drinking/singing event in a Brewery. The October Folk 'n' Fun weekend October 17, 18 & 19 will be at High House Farm Brewery, near Matfen in Northumberland. This is one of the finest micro breweries I have been to. They grow their own materials and all the beers are good, I have tried most of them, for research/marketing purposes of course. Some of the past criticisms have been the lack of facility for mobile homes/caravans or tents and early finishing times. Well High House Farm Brewery may be lacking in B&Bs but there is a large field within crawling distance of the brewery and even though the bar shuts at 11.30 we can carry on singing/playing as long as we want. There are B&Bs within a mile of the
venue. |
